Dead Space 3 to have optional dungeons, dismemberment of humans
Joannes Truyens July 26, 2012 - 6:35 pmNews: Dead Space 3′s linear traversal will be broken up with optional, explorable dungeons. Isaac’s dismemberment capabilities aren’t limited to the Necromorphs anymore either, with human enemies suffering the same fate.
Do you know how many times the first Dead Space tells you you have to dismember the Necromorphs? Five times. It was part of the game’s marketing strategy, it’s in a training message, an audio log, someone wrote it on the wall with their blood, and a character tells you. So yeah, there’s a lot of it. But only with the Necromorphs. The first two games have no human enemies (outside of a quicktime event anyways).
Visceral Games are looking to change that for Dead Space 3, which will have Isaac facing off against Unitologist soldiers. While what we’ve seen of those fights has Isaac using some sort of assault rifle, he will also be able to take his venerable cutting tools to their squishy limbs.
“You don’t just have to shoot off their limbs, but if that’s the kind of thing you’re into, you can certainly take off their limbs and torture them. You can even stomp on them,” says Visceral general manager Steve Papoutsis in a PSM3 feature, as captured by CVG.
That’s not the only way in which the Dead Space formula is being played with. We reported earlier that Dead Space 3 would feature “unique beta missions” that are not necessary for progression. According to Destructoid, Papoutsis calls these “dungeons”.
“[The player is] able to go and explore off the beaten track and actually have areas like this that will provide extra opportunities for loot, more backstory, more logs, and things like that. So really, it extends the experience for those people that really kind are those hunter gatherers that want to collect everything,” Papoutsis says.
The first third of the game features a series of dungeons in the form of a spaceship graveyard, a few of which Isaac can opt to explore. These sections are apparently closer to the claustrophobic horror feel that the first Dead Space became renowned for.
Looks like Dead Space 3 will have something for everyone. Keep an eye on BeefJack for more news!
