CD Projekt Red’s latest game Cyberpunk 2077 is eliciting a strong reaction from gamers and fans of the setting already, here’s what Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith had to say

Cyberpunk 2010 Creator Mike Pondsmith on Cyberpunk 2077 'Cyberpunk isn't about saving humanity it's about saving yourself'In a video from Machinima, Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith speaks about how the passion of CD Projekt for the Cyberpunk world is what made this collaboration possible. But the thing that got me most excited for the game, is what he says Cyberpunk isn’t about.

In the video, Pondsmith (who is possessed of the kind of awesome voice designed for narration of dystopian universes), discusses the world he created for the pen and paper RPG and the tone of the setting. He states “Cyberpunk is about that interface between people and technology. But not in that transhumanous way, where it’s all about the technology changing or improving them. It’s about how people use things.” He continues “Cyberpunk isn’t about saving humanity, it’s about saving yourself.”

This suggests that we’re not going to be looking at the allusive imagery and technological hubris found in a game like Deus Ex, where the effect of technology on a person’s humanity is examined in depth. Instead, perhaps we will see a more personal story emerging, albeit in this gritty world created by Pondsmith and brought to life by CDPR.
