Company of Heroes 2 Developer Diary shows you the complexities of the Eastern Front

The new Company of Heroes 2 Developer Diary prepares players for war by showing off several of the games new features, plus there is also beta news and more.

Company of Heroes is one of my favorite RTS games of all time, so forgive my unbridled excitement towards this sequel that I’ve been impatiently waiting for since 2006. Company of Heroes 2 will be using an updated Essence engine and they will be bringing some new features like truesight, coldtech and new movement technology. This World War II RTS is once again only for PC and it is made by Relic, whom you may know for the extensive Dawn of War series for PC. This time around it is focused entirely on the Eastern Front of World War II with combat between the USSR and Germany. The new developer diary shows off plenty of gameplay examples of how of this is whole different and improved Company of Heroes.

In slightly unrelated news, the Company of Heroes 2 beta is going to be starting in early January. In a forum post today Greg Wilson, a producer for COH 2, outlined what is going on over at Relic right now and what the plans are for the closed beta. The beta will be starting just after New Years and that will be available to those who won keys from various events or those who have pre-ordered the game. There aren’t any details on what the beta will be exactly, but if they follow suit from the first Company of Heroes then it will be a multiplayer only beta.

Lastly, that same forum post also details something that may annoy many people, a season pass of sorts, except this one is different. It is called the command pass and it will be free to anyone who pre-orders the game and unlike season passes this one has more to do with advanced access to content, not exclusive content. So, people with the command pass will get to check out new maps earlier and other “bonuses”, but Relic still promises to have free content just like the first game. So far there has been no mention of DLC and hopefully it stays that way, especially since they make some mighty fine expansions. To check out that whole post head on over to the COH 2 forums and take a look at the new developer diary.
