CCP are still committed to World of Darkness MMO

Despite recent layoffs and a refocusing on core EVE Online development, CCP have emphasised that they are still committed to their next MMO, World of Darkness, and development continues apace.

It’s tough, being EVE Online‘s creator. I say this not from personal experience, but as an outside party witness to their public relations plate-spinning. Every time they talk about spin-off EVE FPS DUST 514 or Vampire: The Masquerade MMO World of Darkness – new games which will need promotion if anyone’s to pay heed to their eventual release – it seems to EVE Online’s hardcore that their baby has been forgotten. The ill feeling came to a head with a kerfuffle over microtransactions which cost CCP dearly, and the company has since worked tirelessly to win back the faith of EVE fans. But that, of course, ha – that hasn’t sat well with those waiting for World of Darkness, worried by the ominous quiet since layoffs at CCP; as such, the company has set about making sure fans know they are still committed to making the new MMO.

“There is no shortage of commitment here to making World of Darkness awesome,” said CCP’s new CMO David Reid to Ten Ton Hammer. “I dug deep into that before I came on board and remain absolutely convinced that this is going to be a huge, huge thing based on the resources we’re putting behind it.”

Company CEO Hilmar Pétursson tells of a “kickass team of sixty rock stars” working on the gamefull time: “Despite what you hear from us about DUST and EVE, there are more people working on World of Darkness here at CCP than there are working on AAA at other companies I’ve worked at for the stage of development it’s at.”

CCP are making the most of the opportunity to bring their approach with EVE to a more accessible property, according to Pétursson. “To do what’s been done here with EVE – the economy, the persistence, the Machiavellian politics that players do to construct their own content – imagine what that can be like in a modern era intellectual property, in something everyone understands.

“We don’t all know how to pilot a spaceship, but we all know how to kill a vampire. And that’s the case even if we haven’t played Vampire: The Masquerade.”

I do know how to do that, yes. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Well done CCP; another crisis averted.
