Boss Level’s Scavengers launches Kickstarter campaign

Ever wanted to play a game that combines Worms and X-Com on any platform you want? Boss Level are offering just that with Scavengers, launching a Kickstarter to fund the beta, and claiming it’s the “world’s first truly cross-platform game”.

If all of Sony’s buzzwords during their PlayStation 4 conference got you all hot and bothered, then Boss Level’s Scavengers press release will whip you up into a comparative frenzy. We’ve got cross-platform play, synchronous play, free-to-play, it’s “open to all”, creation, customisation, and a comparison to two major franchises for good measure.

Beneath all that, the game actually looks pretty intriguing, and the two franchises it draws comparison to – Worms and X-Com – look like they might make a good marriage. If they can get the balance of difficulty and deep strategy that X-Com provides right, and combine that with Worms’ eccentricity and creative approach to weaponry, we could have something special on our hands. If only they’d focus more on that and less on the ‘you can play on any device’ angle (okay, it’s a pretty nifty feature and removes barriers between players, but it’s not exactly getting my pulse racing).

“We’re really excited about finally bringing Scavengers to the wider public, both for them to play it, but even more importantly, for them to contribute to it, says Boss Level CEO Nick Brown. “Scavengers really is a world first in that no matter where you play the game and on what platform, you will be able to play exactly the SAME game with everybody else in the world at the same time. We hope that this Kickstarter campaign is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to working with our players as collectively we build a massively fun and engaging shared experience that is open to all.”

The Kickstarter is aiming to raise £15000, and that’ll help push the game into beta. It’s currently playable in alpha, but you need to register to get access. When the game launches, it’ll be completely free-to-play, but backers of the Kickstarter will also get access to the beta as soon as that launches.
