Borderlands 2 Golden Key exploit patched, no one is being punished

News: Gearbox have been pretty quick to patch an exploit on Borderlands 2′s Golden Key, and anyone who got tempted by it is getting off scott-free.

There’s a loot chest in Borderlands 2 located in the hub city of Sanctuary that is a bit different to all other loot chests in the game. This one has a key, a key only a few players that pre-ordered have.  The twist here is the contents are levelled to when you open it. So open it straight away and you’ll get some pretty crappy weaponry. Wait till later on and you may get something glorious. It’s a neat little psychological twist in an action-RPG shooter.

Or at least that was the plan. Unfortunately, or fortunately for those who experienced it, there was a bit of a bug with the box. Some players were getting the option to access it without using up their key. Cue a ton of people opening the golden chest numerous times.

Gearbox have not wasted any time patching it, in fact so fast that barely anyone outside the US will have gotten a chance to take advantage of the exploit (including me because my copy didn’t turn up in today’s post). Randy Pitchford tweeted that not only is it fixed, but no punishments will be given for those taking advantage of the situation. After all they understand the lure, “we get the temptation: doors unlocked, keys in the ignition”. But he did go on to encourage players not to cheat, and besides he’s going to be giving out more golden keys soon “Be cool. We all know when we’re cheating, so be good. I’ll be giving tons of Golden Keys soon.”
