Bethesda working on Elder Scrolls MMO

Rumour: Anonymous sources are claiming that Bethesda are working on an MMO in the Elder Scrolls universe and that the announcement is due in May.

Tom’s Guide are reporting that Bethesda are planning on announcing an MMO set in the Elder Scrolls universe this coming May. The claim was made by an industry source who wishes to remain anonymous, but it was corroborated with two other sources before taken to publication. As always, those corroborating sources are  also anonymous.

The rumour is that the game would be set a full millennium before Skyrim, and thus a couple of hundred years before any of the Elder Scrolls games. There’d be three factiions in the game, each represented by an animal (a lion, a dragon, and a bird). A May announcement would then be followed up with a presence at E3.

Zenimax have been hiring MMO staff for a while now, though it still hasn’t been possible to link the hires to the Elder Scrolls Team. This is depite the elderscrollsonline.com domain name having been registered to Bethesda since 2007. It could well have been a blocking technique used to stop fans from trolling the community.

Then there’s also the recent legal furore between Bethesda and Mojang over the Scrolls trademark, if they were working on an MMO called The Elder Scrolls then Scrolls would seem like a logical shorthand.

So there could be truth in this, we’ll report on any news as it develops. Until then, hmm, don’t bank on it.
