Amnesia: The Dark Descent Was Almost Canned

Posted September 7, 2010 by Lewis Denby in News.

Horror-adventure Amnesia: The Dark Descent releases tomorrow. But it almost wasn’t to be, according to developers Frictional Games.

“There have been several occasions when we seriously considered dropping the project,” Thomas Grip told BeefJack today.

The game’s been rather a financial struggle for the small independent developer, whose previous game – the three-part Penumbra series – was something of an overlooked gem. “We have had to cut salaries almost in half – and they were low to start with,” said Grip. And the troubles aren’t over just because the game’s finished: “Our future as a company depends on this game not flopping, so plenty of butterflies in the stomach.”

You can read more of Thomas’ thoughts on Amnesia’s development, as well as our review of the game itself, tomorrow on BeefJack.

  1. Damn, Penumbra is such an interesting series and i’ve wanted to get my hands on it for ages, I’m going to read more about this game and hopefully purchase it to support the company.

  2. I loved the penumbra series, scary as hell (nothing compared with silly games like fear or resident evil 5).

    BUY THIS GAME!!

  5. I remember buying the penumbra series for like nothing on steam on a bargain weekend. Only played through part of the first one but definetly need to pick it up again. It sure has some interesting stuff in it that’s for sure. They don’t deserve to be forgotten!

  6. This game rocks!! I totally hope people will continue to support the creators and developers of this game. Plus, this game doesn’t make use of those silly boring and tiring cliches of the other games like RE5 and Silent Hill. Please support the people by buying this game and not by downloading pirated version.

  7. Wow I couldn’t believe it when I heard these guys were struggling. I thought Frictional Games was up there. Well guess what Resident Evil and you so-called scary games, Frictional Games is coming back and there’s no way of stopping them. Amnesia and penumbra are definitely some games to play, don’t hesitate. Buy it NOW!!!
I really want to see more from Frictional Games.

I have a dream, that one day, when I go on Google, and type “#1 scariest game”, that I would see Amnesia pop up as the first site. And till that day comes, I will dream of this day every night.
