News: An ARG by Frictional Games has revealed their next game – related somehow to Amnesia: The Dark Descent – will be called A Machine For Pigs, and hints that Dear Esther developers thechineseroom may be lending a hand…

Ooh, now this is exciting. What was formerly a mere teaser site for what looked like a sequel to Frictional GamesAmnesia: The Dark Descent turned into a coding-themed ARG, which has now been completely cracked. That page tells us in no uncertain terms that something called A Machine For Pigs will be released during Autumn 2012.

Backing up theories that this will be a follow-up to Amnesia are two pieces of concept art linked in the announcement text. Both show particularly gory scenes from a clearly decades-old abbatoir, styled with enough darkened menace to feel consistent with Amnesia’s lonely brand of horror. Oh, and one of them is the background of the main site with ‘AMNESIA’ written across it in huge lettering. That’s a pig, right?

I really hope that’s a pig.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the ARG, however, is that it drops numerous hints that Dear Esther developers thechineseroom are involved somehow. According to findings collected on this wiki, everything from Google Maps links (the original teaser simply linked to an image of China, while a later link pointed to an island in the region where Dear Esther takes place) to an email address on the completed ARG page strongly hint at the UK team’s involvement. It’s all very intriguing stuff, so go have a read.

If the concept of indie tag-team survival horror development pokes at your enthusiasm gland, don’t forget you can keep up with Frictional Games‘ exploits right here on BeefJack.

Big hat-tip to Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
