Video: A modder is remaking the Marine section from Rebellion’s Aliens vs Predator in CryEngine 3 and it looks glorius.
Rebellion’s 1999 Aliens vs Predator is probably the scariest game I’ve ever played. Or at least scariest third of a game. The marine section of it was terrifying. You’d be walking down a poorly-lit corridor, trying to figure out if you really had seen something moving when you first turned the corner. The slow beat of your motion tracker should be reassuring, nothing’s nearby, but actually you’re just waiting for it to ping off something. Suddenly it does. Something’s at your left. You spin round, finger pressed down hard on the mouse button. Bullets cough out the pulse rifle at a tremendous speed. It runs empty, and you realise you managed to only kill one bloody Alien. Then the motion tracker starts going again.
No one’s really managed to recreate that atmosphere, not even Rebellion who came close with their 2010 title. As is usually the case, the internet comes to the rescue. Modder oldschool.Dave has released a video of his ongoing remake in the CryEngine 3. It looks amazing, the lighting is brilliant, and the sounds are spot on. He’s not having any of these modern shooter conveniences either, Autoheal is off. Even the acid from eggs will nearly kill you. There’s just no aliens in it yet.
Hopefully this mod will allow us to relive the horrifying experience with glorious new fangled graphics. That is if the copyright lawyers don’t stamp on it.
