A nice spot by Gameranx over on the Bioware Forums suggests that we may be seeing Commander Shepard’s health and ammo displayed in the game world a la Dead Space in the next Mass Effect.
Brenon Holmes, a programmer at Bioware, responded to the thread discussing how the HUD could be improved for Mass Effect 3 when the idea of a diagetic HUD was tossed around:
“We actually had the exact same thought during ME2 development and did a few prototypes of a health and shield indicator in world on Shepard’s armour. The end result was not as great as we’d hoped…”
Despite the problems that arised from trying to find a suitable position for the indicator when in the open and in cover, in addition to the complication arising from having a health and shield bar on Shepard’s armour, it appears to be a device they are still seriously considering.
“All that said, we’re still really interested in trying to move information into the world. That’s one of the things that I love about Dead Space; the interface… it feels really immersive. I just want to touch the hell out of those buttons. So we are still investigating ways of putting some of our HUD elements into the environment… we’ll see what we end up with.”
Until that time comes, we’ll just have to make do with the perfectly acceptable Mass Effect 2 HUD. Oh and don’t forget, the final piece of DLC for Mass Effect 2, Arrival, is up tomorrow.

I would love it if they did this. I think it would fit well with the sci-fi setting and I wouldn’t knock them for taking Visceral’s approach of placing HUD elements into the armor. It would definitely clean up the game and immerse you into the world just a little more imho.
