3DS Pokemon Rumble Blast trailer – someone please expain what’s going on

Right…so as far as I can tell, you are playing a Mii that is playing as the toy Pokemon that the Mii is playing with. It’s like Inception got its wires crossed with Being John Malkovitch. Check out the gameplay below.
I must be getting old because I can’t make heads or tails of it. Apparently the game is kind of a dungeon-crawler, where you will battle with your Pokemon til you reach the end of the level/cave before you verse a boss Pokemon. The game will include 600 toy (why toys? Seriously?) Pokemon from all series and use the StreetPass system for multiplayer modes. I remember the good ol’ days when there was only 150 of them Pokemons, and Mewtwo and Mew were the most exciting additions ever.
