Warner Bros. Acquires Turbine Inc.

Warner Bros. Entertainment has made another big gaming splash today after announcing the purchase of independent MMO studio Turbine Inc.  Be afraid people, be very afraid…

Turbine currently owns three of the more popular MMOs on the market, Asheron’s Call, Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online.  Before the deal Turbine was the largest independent MMO studio in North America.

Turbine becomes the newest conquest for Warner, a company that just a few years ago had almost zero video game presence.  However with the acquisition of most of Midway’s assets, a majority ownership in Rocksteady and the purchase of TT games, Warner has literally bought it’s way into relevance

The interweb is already abuzz with fans of LOTRO lamenting the impending death of their favorite MMO, though it’s hard to say just what Warner’s involvement in Turbine will turn out to be.  I think Warner’s smartest move would be to let Turbine do it’s own thing, but I have a sneaking suspicion that micro management may be the name of the game.
