August’s top 5 most exciting games

Feature: August sees the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the PC version of Dark Souls, both of which we’re excited to get our hands on. But they don’t quite make our top five this month. Here are the games we’re the most giddy about, ranked in reverse order for the bloody sake of it.

5. Papo & Yo

Formats: PS3
Release date: 14th August

Why we’re excited: On the surface, Papo & Yo looks like an adventure about a boy and a fantastical creature. But it’s actually a metaphor for growing up in a troubled family. Those sorts of issues aren’t touched often in games, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one works out.

4. New Super Mario Bros. 2

Formats: 3DS
Release date: 17th August

Why we’re excited: The original game was a delightful mix of old and new Mario which really scratched our Nintendo itch. This sequel is unlikely to shake things up too much, but with a Mario game, sometimes staying the same is no bad thing.

3. Darksiders II

Formats: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release date: 21st August

Why we’re excited: Developers Vigil Games are promising something bigger and better than the already-quite-impressive action-fest that was the original Darksiders. We have some doubts about whether it can truly live up to its promise, but if Vigil can pull it off then this could be something special.

2. Guild Wars 2

Formats: PC
Release date: 21st August

Why we’re excited: It’s an eagerly anticipated MMO that promises to separate itself from the super-saturated crowd by introducing dynamic events that play out within the world. Our early impressions were mixed, but they’ve had enough time to polish up the edges.

1. Sleeping Dogs

Formats: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
Release date: 17th August

Why we’re excited: This open-world extravaganza looks to be that little bit more intelligent than many of its peers. The combat is great, but what’s really getting us excited is the idea of some properly mature storytelling, and a world that feels vibrant and truly alive.
