BitBoy Top

The website for Bit Boy!!, a WiiWare title from indie developer Bplus, launched today, and that’s the simple part. The difficult to articulate part is exactly what kind of game this is. The closest terms I can find is a faux-retro pac-man clone with action/adventure elements. The game is self-described in the press release as having:

“4-bit dungeons,
8-bit caves,
16-bit strongholds,
32-bit mazes,
64-bit arenas and
128-bit worlds.”

This YouTube trailer may shed some light on to exactly what kind of game this this, but it might not. The story is simply “one-pixel-hero Kubi rushes through the whole history of videogames in order to save his pixel pals”, where you literally transcend the different “bit generations” that each console generation had. From the graphics of the 4-bit Atari all the way to today’s 128-bit gaming.

And not just the graphics; it looks to illustrate the relationship between the technology behind a game and the limits of the game’s world. The game features local cooperative play with two Wiimotes, is available in Europe now, and is coming to North America this month.
