Cave Story’s protagonist gets a palate swap
As I mentioned before, WiiWare seems to be a great place for indie developers to go. It’s got a huge install base, and so far indie games have done pretty well, while occasionally using the WiiMote in unique ways. So I’m extra disappointed in Nintendo for keeping Cave Story, freeware turned WiiWare, from being released.
Like I said, Cave Story was, and is, freeware, anybody can download it free of charge. I could play it right now, but I’m waiting for the WiiWare version. It’s supposed to look better, have a professional translation, and I just might be able to give the developer a bit of my cash.
But, the news itself. The Cave Story protagonist “Quote” has gone through three iterations. Thanks to Destructoid for putting them all side by side, as you can see below.
Very small, but the differences are obvious. The far left is from the original Cave Story, the middle is what Quote was supposed to look like, and the right is what he may look like now. Destructoid thinks it’s either DLC, or trying to distance Quote from Ash Ketchum, or a second-player skin. I think it’s got something to do with the Pokemon thing.
It makes me sick that something as insignificant as the color of his pants and hat could be enough to keep this game out of my hands. But don’t worry folks, Pokemon is safe from the thieving hands of indie-developers!
