Playstation Home has 7 million users

Or as Joystiq puts it, only 1 in 3 Playstation 3 owners have connected to Playstation Home, given that 21 million systems have been sold worldwide.
In the original article on Gamasutra, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s director Peter Edward, gives out various facts and figures regarding the “success” of Playstation Home. These facts include that Red Bull’s free Air Race game has been played by 873,136 unique users, while the Watchmen film campaign video had 812,544 unique views and two free Watchmen avatar items were downloaded 1.65 million times. In terms of the demographics 80% of Home users are male in the 18-35 age demographic, which is actually less than the 90% Sony expected.
Given the way that positive spin is always put on figures such as this, it is hard to say how successful the social aspect of Home actually is and how many of the 7 million people who downloaded Home use it regularly rather than tried it and don’t use it anymore. This is made harder given that Home is now being integrated into the lobby system of games including Warhawk, Street Fighter 4 and Resistance 2 further inflating the numbers.
Regardless of what the actual number of regular Home users is, it is clear from the interview that Sony is committed to Playstation Home and that it will be integrated into more games. Whether this is a good or bad thing only time will tell.
