When it was originally released, the PlayStation 3 was able to play PlayStation 2 games, however that feature was later removed.

That move annoyed many gamers, but now it seems that the system may be getting the ability to play PS2 games back. A patent filed by Sony in December 2008 shows technology that would allow the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor to replicate the PlayStation 2’s emotion engine processor, meaning that it is a software solution to replicate hardware emulation – basically they don’t have to put the Emotion Engine in the system because the current hardware can do the job.

Of course, this could be a prelude to full PS2 game downloads via the PSN store and not allow the use of PS2 discs, but Sony have not commented as yet so no one is quite sure.
