NBA 2K10 is October’s Best Seller

October is one of the slowest months in video games. There are usually a limited number of releases, and most companies and consumers are really saving up for the holiday rush. Citing information from the NPD Group, Gamespot reports that this October was especially slow, as it suffered a %19 decline from last year. That decline, while large, is not disastrous when you compare the actual numbers. While there is a substantial drop off, 2007 and 2008 were the best October’s ever, and this past October still fits in as third place all time.
Over the course of the month, there were a few blockbuster releases that sold quite well. Uncharted 2 was the best performer when it comes to any one platform, but Borderland’s cumulative sales (sales over all consoles) beat it out. The crown jewel of the month, when it comes to overall sales, was 2K Sports’ NBA 2K10. This year’s edition of the game released for the XBOX 360, PS3, Wii and PC. The game met with solid critical reception, but was given more negative feedback then usual. Luckily for 2K Sports, there reputation was good enough to carry them to excellent sales.

With the NPD only covering North America, it’s quite different in the UK. October is typically a fairly successful month with the release of FIFA and PES, which obviously fare better over here.
Saying that, I did find myself with a copy of NBA 2K10, but it won’t have affected the NPD figures too much.
