Electronic Arts Lays Off 1,500 Employees

Despite its usual blockbuster releases, purchases of small studios and long standing pedigree, Electronic Arts is finding itself in the need of a new structure. The company is adjusting its global workforce and restructuring to the tune of a %17 lay-off. According to Gamespot:
The reorg will also see the publisher “provide greater focus on titles with higher [profit] margin opportunities.” As a result, Riccitiello “over a dozen” games had been canceled, although he did not identify any specific titles.
“Anything that doesn’t measure up to be in a very high profit contributor and unit seller got cut from this point going forward,” said the CEO.
The lay-off will accompany the shut down of a number of EA’s facilities and is set to be completed by March 31. Details are very fuzzy at this point, and the facilities to be closed have not been publicly identified. This will be a difficult time for the employees who are losing their jobs, and it should be very interesting to see which franchises will be shut down.
