Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 priced at $60 on PC
I’ve been a PC gamer as far back as I can remember. I was raised on the likes of Warcraft II, Diablo, and Half Life. One benefit to being primarily a PC gamer is that despite the higher cost of entry for a decent gaming machine, this generation showed us a break, with prices of retail games sitting just around $50 for almost every game, $10 cheaper than console counterparts.
Gamestop, Amazon, and BestBuy all list Modern Warfare 2 as being $60 for, you guessed it, the PC. Not only is there a price hike, but for those willing to hurl their wads of cash at Activision, the Prestige Edition isn’t available for PC. This trend is also seen in Batman: Arkham Asylum, which doesn’t offer their collector’s edition for PC.
By raising of the price for MW2 for U.K. gamers to £54.99 and even more expensive peripheral based games like Tony Hawk Ride, DJ Hero, and Band Hero I’m sure some gamers are starting to feel that enough is enough. Analyst Michael Pachter told Eurogamer:
“Activision knows it has a ‘hot’ game, knows that the market will pay an additional 10 percent, and has decided to increase price accordingly.”
Call of Duty 4 sold a ludicrous number of copies, and Activision knows that this is going to be huge as well. They know well enough to bump other product of theirs into next year, as seen with Singularity, and the rest of the industry is afraid of being washed away in the tide of AAA competition, as with Bayonetta.
If the game does turn out to be too expensive, people won’t buy it and Activision will learn their lesson. That or more likely, enough people will buy it and these higher prices just may be the norm from now on. I, with my limited funds, know I won’t be ponying up the $60 for the PC version, but I just may buy a copy of it for consoles used, just to keep Activision in check.

I really hope these price rises backfire on Activision leading to massively reduced sales. At the moment Activision seem to be doing all they can to acquire a poorer reputation that Electronic Arts!!
is it really a big deal? i mean its only $10 even though i don’t really not care since i already reserved it for the xbox 360. You pc owners cant just waste 10 extra dollars for a great game?
and i hardly doubt the prices will backfire on activision because mostly all great games for the xbox360 cost around $60 which isnt really a big change for us and the ps3 owners will probably have the same price as new games anyways
Oh come an, one of the great things with being a PC gamer is to get cheaper games. Anyone wanna go burn down Activision and kill all the employes in there sleep?
Why does anyone car. Its been said many many times in many many articles by industry leaders that companies dont have to charge $60 for a game on Ps3 and 360 but u dont see us complaining do u? $10 is that big of a deal plus the majority of game sales comes from consoles not PC’s as soon as the PC version hits its amediatly pirated and put on the net.
PC versions of games are just way to wrisky any more.
Technically its not a big deal,
but the game is $60, with maybe 3 map packs @ $10-15 each… yeah, the game ain’t $50 anymore, but more like $100.
that’s about $20 the play time…
But no worries, Skullptura is here to save us all.
Screw Activision. They think they can waltz in and change the price of games cause they think its better? They know theres better they’re playing on the fact that its popular and trying to rip people off!
f*** activision. I’ m pirating the game. They can’t f*** us over like this.
see activision just doesnt want anyone to like them anymore, first with sueing ea over brutal legend and now this, im deff not buying this game
yea plus they said they may have to stop supporting PS3 which was a complete lye they couldnt afford to do that like 40-45% of there customers are sony owners.
OH boo hoo now PC people have to pay the same, so what its a great game and its not like their forcing you to buy it. If you want it then your willing to pay for it, if you think it costs too much, well then i guess you dont really want it that bad.
well thats activision mayb infinty ward will understand our troubles and send us the first dlc free, ever think of that, who wouldnt love infinity ward for doin that, and then break away from activison, and then no body buys there shit again and infinity ward continues with the modern warfare games, thats a great thought eh lol
@#6 lol Skullptura i know wat u mean man dat was my intention all along
And you wonder why people pirate stuff.
Why is anyone complaining? With MW2 on PC you so much more graphical capabilities, plus much more content, and now that its equal with the console price of MW2 and the PC players still get more then us they are the ones complaining??? WOW!
Dustin (#10) is absolutely correct, if Activision stopped supporting SONY that would hurt themselves more than it would SONY because Actvision would obviously lose SONY’s fanbase which consists on three totally seperate platforms: The PS3, PS2, and PSP – There’s NO WAY Activision would do this…
The reasoning behind this is actually quite idiotic. PC games are cheaper for a different reason. Sony and Microsoft, in an effort to prevent their games from being stolen and pirated, use a hardware, disc level encryption technique that prevents them from being read on a burner. Without that signature, they won’t even recognize the files. That said, PC games are usually cheaper BECAUSE they don’t have this, or if they do, it is fairly simple to do with a standard and easy common format. A PC games is MUCH cheaper to produce as compared to a console game, since pressing is only 2/3 of what a console game is. With digital retail, there is NO need to go to such lengths as pressing it. 60 USD is downright bullshit, and so is 50 USD. Reason being it is cost effective at 30 USD as compared to a 45 USD for console games. Paying DOUBLE what it requires to put out a PC copy is absolute BS, hell AAA titles on PC DVD-DL used to go for 45. Then Microsoft upped it to 50 after the release of the Xbox(original), and people were willing to pay that BS amount for a shitty PC port and pressed discs. I for one, am not buying this now, in any version. I was planning on getting a normal and prestige, but screw that.
Call of Duty 4 price in Russia was around 20 dollars
Exellent coutry…
well MR Koller (or whatever his name is) it looks like the ps3 is not the only thing who needs a price drop.
activision are the new EA.
EA use to spew out shit and expect a high price for it, now there coming out with some decent titles so activision has decided to take their place.
bit pond is looking mighty good now.
god bless the pirates.
Is $10.00 really that big a deal? I know myself that PC games are usually cheaper and I know that I have never spent $60 on a PC game, but this is going to be game of the year without a doubt. It really is worth it to throw down the extra ten dollars and suck it up in our wallets.
I really do think you guys are going to find yourself sucking it up eventually even if you boycott buying it at first because you are going to hear so many great things about it and all your friends are going to get it and well, you are just going to have to see if it lives up to its reputation yourself. Nuff said.
ahem… everyone is saying “if you dont buy it and boycott the release” or some crap like that you will be ending up buying it anyway because of all the great comments, reviews and such, and the only thing you’ve achieved is to play the game later than everybody else, BUT you are not seeing the big picture here, all the ppl whos complaining about the price WILL NOT sit on their asses play COD4 just to not feel left behind, THEY’RE (as ill do) gonna get the pirated version you ass-crack, were you really thinking “it they dont buy, they wont be playing it” ? seriously? how naive are you?
haha, They were gonna get 50 from me, now they will get zero. I will just wait for a torrent of the game
With 60$ i can get some more rams or something more usefull.I will NOT buy that game at that price. But i WILL play it.(figure it out genius!)
I don’t agree with them charging an extra $10 and not releasing the prestige edition (worthless anyways imo) for PC either, especially when you consider the fact that it’s going to be the same damn tired ass gameplay with slightly improved visuals. However, I find it sad to see so many “IM GON PIERET LAWLZ” comments. Either man up and pay the extra $10 if you really want to play it, or wait for it to go on sale. Simple as that.
OR maybe you should go out and try to steal that 50 inch flat screen tv that you really want but refuse (read: can’t afford) to pay $1000+ for too.
I hope this gets pirated like s#%t. It’s a worthless cash-in and doesn’t deserve your money. It’s that simple.
I am not impressed. We as the consumers have to make a conscious decision whether to purchase the game for $10 or £10 more for no reason other then the company’s greed? We are basically being exploited! The fact is our decision whether to buy it or not will have severe repercussions to how all future ‘big’ titles will be priced. I say we make a stand and ignore the title until they come to their senses….Who is going to be brave enough to follow suit?!
Cracked servers here we go! this game is gonna get pirated so hard because of this lame idea.
The reason console games are always more expensive, is because console gamers lack basic intelligence. They need everything to be simple and so they pay the extra $10 for the convenience of being lackadaisical. PC gamers please use your heads here. You know if the game is good your still going to buy it. They know that as well, which is why they raised the price. It doesn’t matter to me as long as we continue to get great PC games. I would hate to be reduced to the level of a console user.
Sucks !!
Omg you guys are pathetic. You are telling me that you have thousands of dollars to upgrade your computers, yet you guys complain about adding a simple $10 to the cost of a game. You guys are complaining saying “I am not going to buy this game, Activision sucks” yet they are one of the best Fps Game developers out there. Everyone knows you will not buy it on release date, then see how good it is , then buy it. So stop your B****ing and pay an extra $10 you bunch of panzies!
So, if anyone out there did any research, you would see that a big reason why it is cheaper to produce pc games (thus why they can be priced cheaper) is that publishers don’t have to pay royalties to any one console maker for pc games. That has been the reason why. Now as for whether pc gamers will pay 60 bucks is a different story. There are different points to be made on both sides, but I think all gamers can agree that a price increase tends to be a bad thing, right? Do we want cheaper games?
It has nothing to do with if console players are “dumb” or not. Sorry, that kind of comment bugs me more than I thought it could. I play both console and pc games and enjoy both. So, whatever.
Well, with a game like Call of Duty they have the right to bump up the price, that ensures the developers get the cash they need to bring us DLC and the best game AND support possible! It’s worth it
Discuss MW2 at the Modern Warfare 2 forum over on modernwarfare2forum.net
I can’t even remember computer games being that much in price. I’ll just wait until it comes down in price to get it.
I don’t agree with the price of the game being 60$, It has already been said that PC games cost lest to manufacture and sell! No royalties to Sony and Microsoft! Therefore I think that games for PC should be less than consoles! I am NOT OK with PC Version being 60$ and Console version being 60$ ALTHOUGH! If console was 70$ and PC was 60$ I would be OK with that. I believed that PC Games should always be 10$+ cheaper than Consoles. And to the guys that complain “It’s only 10 Bucks!” Well it’s just the concept of raising the price…and I am only 15… AKA, I don’t have a job. So I’m either going to get this new game bundled with a graphics card from newegg, or to the pirate bayz I go!
Screw This!! I was thinking of buying this for the 360, £10 extra so i decided i wanted the pc version. Ah what the hell i’m pirating this shit!!
its a hot offer.
There is no logical reason for Activision to increase the price for a PC games. Like many have stated already PC games are cheap as hell to manufacture, and there is no reason other than exploitation and profit that someone would bump the price up by an extra 10 dollars. The game IS not worth the extra 10, since there are many other games just as complex if not more complex with better graphics that stick with the $50 price range. I figure that a lot of people will end up pirating the game and then the company will complain that the PC side is unprofitable…well I wonder why.
Ah, if I had more money I wouldn’t care enough to post. Also, I was going to wait for the price to drop anyway, since I wasn’t as thrilled with CoD4 MW as apparently most people were. Though, it’s still a pretty good game, it’s just not *great* IMO, and I expect MW2 to follow suit.
But being that I’m poor, and being that it takes freakin ages for price drops to occur in the first place, this is some seriously bad news for my already-shrinking wallet. Especially if the trend continues with future games.
I also still don’t see why the hike? Is Microsoft now charging extra fees for licensing a game to play on Windows? Somehow, I think not.
You people telling us to “suck it up” are just pathetic. So when you don’t like something, you just bend over and take it – I mean, that’s what being a real man is all about.
If it’s a great game, I’d rather play it later when it sells cheaper. I mean, since it’s so great, the community will stick around, and it will keep its value as a classic game. If I wanted to be with the cool kids, I’d rather watch Twillight and dress like a retard than support Activision into ruining the gaming industry.
Anyways, the fact is, this game is most likely a big fat piece of crap, and the latest exemple of gaming yearly franchises.
i need the product code for pc i stole the game from wallmart and i really wanna play it but i only have cd’s can someone tell me theres
pc fanboi here (hey, at least i’m admitting it)
*note: own all 3 current gen consoles also
I’d just like to say that why are we arguing at all? $60 dollars is too much for ANYBODY to pay for a single game. and thats before DLC? Before you know it, they’re going to start charging $70 or $80 for a single game…
also:
at #5: while pc piracy is rampant, xbox 360 piracy is right up there with it, both available on the net the first day. however, i will give it too you though that nobody pirates ps3 games because the games are on blu-ray. (irony: blu-ray saved sony from failure and piracy!)
finally:
at #17: actually the reason both the ps3 and xbox cost $60 while pc and wii cost $50 is because sony and microsoft use that money for advertisements on their dashboards. you don’t see ads on the pc or wii do you? the games aren’t more to pay for the tech, their more to pay for the advertisement. after all, wii uses the same thing
