ageofconan Age of Conan Tries to Draw Me Back

It seems that ever since World of Warcraft launched, all other MMORPGs have gone something like this: they are hyped as the “WoW” killer, preorders reach about 50,000, the company launches early even though bugs are reported in beta testing; two to three months late the game cuts down on servers, attempts a free-to-play scheme, and ultimately falls off everyone’s radar.

Does this sound familiar? Funcom ran into this scenario when it launched Age of Conan. Initially the game launched without any huge hiccups. That is until players got out of the lowbie zones and found Funcom needed to add some more content. I, like so many other gamers, quit AoC after my initial month and haven’t really looked back since.

So, to my surprise I found an email from Funcom this morning asking me to give the game another shot with a free 14-day “re-evaluation” period. The email was a bit enticing, explaining all the upgrades Funcom dropped into AoC in the past several months. The biggest appeal may be that re-subscribers can start a new level 50 character, so you can skip days of grinding.

This may be enough to send me back to the world of Hyboria. If I do, I’ll be sure to share with you my thoughts on how Funcom has improved AoC.
