Halo 3 (Use the Disc!)

One of the main features of the NXE update for the Xbox 360 is the option of being able to install games onto the hard drive. Doing so does a number of things, first of all with the game running off the hard drive you no longer must endure the excessively loud spinning of the Xbox 360 drive.

Secondly in many cases running off the hard drive will speed up load times for games. Not so for Halo 3 say many gamers when they discovered that load times actually take longer when installed to the hard drive. Bungie has addressed the issue and explains why this occurs.

“So in conclusion, please be aware that installing Halo 3 to your HDD will actually result in longer load times and thus a less optimal experience than if you run the game from the disc drive. This happens due to the way Halo 3 already uses a HDD to cache data and once you do an install, you are copying between two different areas of the same drive as you are loading a map.”

Bungie also says they have no plans to change how Halo 3 works, instead they just suggest you continue to use the traditional disc.

“it would be a significant undertaking to try and retroactively patch/update Halo 3 to be optimized to take advantage of the HDD install features of NXE. The risks of doing that and the resources required has to be carefully considered against what could really be a rather insignificant change to the player experience. For now our team is focused on making great games for the future like Halo 3 : Recon and other unannounced projects but we will continue to monitor this situation.”
