As part of a broader corporate restructuring (gutting) in response to the current global economic apocalypse (seriously, at this rate the planet’s soon going to look exactly like Waterworld, only with oceans of the unemployed instead of water), THQ have laid off 100 employees in charge of developing games for idiot phones to focus instead on developing for smart phones like the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

This means that their San Diego, U.K., and German wireless offices will be shuttered.  THQ have already cut 250 workers in other divisions and cancelled several game titles that had been in development for various platforms.  This new focus on only their strongest revenue streams has been estimated to save the company about $100 million in spending.

For gamers, this means that THQ will most likely be pushing their established franchises even harder.  So we can probably look forward to Saints Row 3, Saints Row Mobile, and Lil’ Saints Row Kart Racers in the coming months.  Which, speaking as a fan, doesn’t sound all that bad.
