Shenmue changed my life. Till this day I have never played a game that was so awe-inspiring, so captivating and magnificent, it did, and still does, sum up the pinnacle of immersive gaming. Like many, every day I have been eagerly awaiting the confirmation that the epic Shenmue saga will end… Today could be that day.
In the latest issue of Famitsu Sega revealed that despite the low sales of the previous two entries they haven’t ignored critical, and fan based reception of the franchise. However, due to the excessively high production costs the series has been put on hold. Now Sega have revealed that if one of the three hardware manufactures paid for it, (ideally Xbox 360) it could, and would happen.
Translated by Eurogamer.pt: None of the previous games sold really well for the investment made, and SEGA is in doubt as to if it will resurrect the series. However, SEGA assured the fans that if there is some opportunity to revisit the series, they would love to do it.
SEGA also mentioned the chance of one of the three hardware makers financing the game’s (Shenmue III) production in exchange for an exclusivity deal.
The original – which was estimated to have cost 70 million – and it’s follow up, Shenmue II, were the last gamers saw of the stunning franchise. However, rumours have existed for years surrounding a possible third incarnation. With an MMO in production at one point title, Shenmue Online.
I’ve already stated how much of a fan I am of the series, but I’m not alone… fellow Shenmue fans, this could be the day we’ve all been waiting for. Stick with BeefJack as we’ll be sure to continue this story as it develops.
