Capcom: Don’t Blame Us
Stop me if you’ve heard this one; violence in video games makes kids do bad things.
I’ve long thought the argument against violent video games was ridiculous, and it looks like Capcom, probably unsurprisingly, agrees with me on the subject.
The company of Resident Evil fame was getting some heat from UK religious leaders about their newest installment in the series The Darkside Chronicles. The clergy, who included Bishop Bryant of Jarrow, Archdeacon Brian Smith and Rt Rev John Goddard said the following :
If we dabble in this area we open ourselves to influences and put ourselves at risk. I would regard any encouragement for children to be drawn into this behaviour with extreme horror.
Besides completely missing the point, the men received a sound talking to from Capcom employee Leo Tan who had these juicy nuggets:
This is scaremongering and typical religious hysteria. You cannot blame society’s ills on video games. It’s just absurd. Video games are entertainment and like horror movies or other scary films they are covered by a ratings system.
Amen Mr. Tan. I always find it funny that movies such as glorified horror-porn flicks like Saw or Hostel never get brought up when violent video games do; odd no? You could make the argument that the images seen on film are in most cases more disturbing than any M rated game.
But what do I know; I’m just one of the corrupted.
