Ten ‘Coolest’ Weapons in Gaming
As anyone who has even casually seen a video game can tell you, there are generally a lot of weapons involved. A lot. So we here at BeefJack put our heads together and came up with ten of the coolest weapons you can find in gaming. (That’s the official reason that we’re giving, but in truth we feel like it’s about time that we got out some kind of top ten!)
Now, there are an insane amount more than the weapons listed here, and you may not agree with all the selections, but these are some of our personal favourites from games ranging from realtime strategy (RTS) to platformers.
BFG 9000 – Doom
Ah, the BFG 9000. An icon, some might say a legend. Officially standing for ‘Bio Force Gun’, anyone old enough to remember when the first Doom came out will tell you that it was called something else.
It was big and some might say stupidly over powered, but it was awesome to run around clearing entire rooms of the hordes of hell with one blast of brilliant green plasma. We recommend turning on god mode and just going to town.
Lightsaber – Star Wars franchise
Several of the weapons on this list are recognisable by gamers the world over, but how many are recognised by the world, full stop? Only one we wager, and of course it has to be the Lightsaber.
An energy sword that can burn through blast doors and slice AT-ST’s in half along with their occupants, the distinctive hum of the Lightsaber makes it one of the coolest weapons ever created, let alone in gaming.
.
Ion Cannon – Command and Conquer franchise
Do you remember the scene towards the end of Independence Day where Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum had just activated the nuke and the last word that Mr. Smith says when waving at the aliens is “Peace!”? Well that’s the word you need to use shortly after hearing “Ion Cannon Ready” in Command and Conquer. Shortly after that? Well, your enemies are toast, along with a very large portion of the landscape.
Orbital satellite weapons are just cool, mostly because the amount of fire they rain down on your foes is so satisfying. Cue maniacal laughter and the press of a very large button which fires an even larger blast of energy and is just about as powerful as a nuke, just without that pesky radiation.
Gun Blade – Final Fantasy VIII
Most people will tell you that swords are pretty damn cool, as are daggers, knives and basically anything with a blade and a point. So what is a way to make such items even cooler and more deadly in combat, especially if you’re fighting an array of mystical beasts?
Square Enix had the answer, and it really was quite simple; stick a gun on the back of a sword. Ah, but that’s a bayonet, isn’t it? We hear you cry! Well just look at the picture to the left. That is no mere twist-on dagger my friends. No, that is a full-on sword that can also shoot people in the face, and that is just plain cool.
Fat Boy - Fallout 3
For millennia, man has looked for a way to have the power of the sun in the palm of his hand. In this never ending quest, he invented the thermonuclear bomb, but as the residents of the wasteland in Fallout 3 can attest, that was a little too big.
So a couple of hundred years down the road, some inventive soul came up with the Fat Boy, a very cool weapon that finally lets you have the power of the sun, or, more specifically, a mini nuke, in your hand. Pretty damn sweet. We think you will agree.
Gundams – Gundam franchise
The world needs mechs; it’s a universal fact. Tanks on treads and airplanes are a little boring now, and the only thing better is a massive metal suit that’s armed to the teeth and can fly.
The only thing better than that is to make it almost indestructible and have giant angel wings on its back. Which brings us nicely onto the Gundams, which are all the above and more. Hell, they are even armed with giant Lightsabers, and one has a twenty foot Gatling cannon. Tell us that ain’t cool, we dare ya!
Crossbow and Ammo – Oddworld: Strangers Wrath
A simple crossbow may be an odd choice to include on this list, but this particular crossbow is very cool indeed. Normal crossbows use arrow’s of various varieties as ammo to put an end to your foes, but Stranger’s crossbow uses a variety of woodland creatures as its ammo.
From spiders that web up your foes to squirrels that chat at them to keep them distracted, this living ammo makes the humble crossbow a very cool and funny weapon to use.
Groovitron – Ratchet and Clank Future
Essentially a disco ball combined with a grenade, this weapon causes all enemies nearby to stop what they are doing and dance.
It isn’t lethal by any means to throw it into a group of robot enemies. We dare you to not crack a smile as they start to boogey on down while you swat ‘em from behind.

Masamune – Final Fantasy VII
Otherwise known as ‘that insanely long katana Sephiroth uses’, the Masamune is cool for two reasons:
1. It is used by one of the most badass villains ever to grace a videogame
2. Its seven feet long. That’s almost a basket ball player.
It’s the weapon used in probably the most famous plot twist in the whole of gaming, and is the long, slender, and even more deadly looking counter part to Cloud’s massively oversized buster sword. You can also buy a real world version of it as well, and there aren’t many weapons on this list that can say that.
Armacham HV Penetrator – F.E.A.R
The final weapon on our list is essentially an over powered nail gun. You know, like the one you used to hang that picture? Except this one uses very large and thick nails, and not just pictures to walls, but also full armoured soldiers, too.
And the coolest thing about this weapon? The fact you can literally staple your enemies to walls, and trust us, there is nothing more satisfying that letting loose with this bad boy in a room full of bad guys, then surveying the carnage to see a bunch of lifeless corpses stapled to the walls in grotesque ways. A very cool weapon and hats off to the makers of F.E.A.R.
So there you have it, ten of our favourite weapons from some of our favourite games. Logicially, if you want to be the most badass dude in the universe, kit yourself out with these beauties and no one can touch you. There are many, many more weapons out there so what are your favourites? Do you have something that can beat down everything on our list? Let us know!

Gun Blade should be number one!
And where’s the lancer?
My favorite is the lightsabers.
