That’s No Moon! It’s Alderaan!
Say what you will about the Star Wars prequels, but the original Star Wars is still one of my all time favorite movies and demands some respect.
One of the movie’s key scenes is the destruction of Princess Leia’s home world Alderaan. The newly completed Death Star destroys the planet after an answer she gives concerning the location of the Rebel Allegiance fails to placate Governor Tarkin.
If you, like me, have ever wondered what Leia’s home world was like, we will now get the chance thanks to Star Wars : The Old Republic. The game’s official site has just announced it as a visitable planet, but keep in mind this won’t be the Alderaan of Luke Skywalker’s time. Here is a snippet from the site’s description.
Since the Republic’s inception, Alderaan’s nobility has been at the political forefront, taking a stand in the Senate for peace, freedom and unity. While Coruscant has always been considered the heart of the Republic, to some extent, Alderaan has been its soul. In the aftermath of the Treaty of Coruscant, however, Alderaan withdrew from the Republic and soon became embroiled in one of the bloodiest civil wars in the galaxy’s history. The future of this once-proud planet is heavily in doubt.
Now if the people over at Lucas Arts do anything well (and Bioware for that matter) it’s tell a good story. It will be interesting to see how this turbulent planet becomes the peace-loving world it was in modern Star Wars cannon. Plus, in case you couldn’t tell, I’m geeking out about the whole thing just a tiny bit.
